Marathon Kids receives MSDF Grant
Austin, TX-Marathon Kids®, a 13 year old Austin-based, national non-profit that currently serves 172,000 USA registered K-5th graders in seven cities, is to receive a $767,749 grant from The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation (http://www.msdf.org), for the Texas Marathon Kids program. The funds are for Austin, Dallas, Houston and Rio Grande Valley Marathon Kids®.
The 18 month grant is directed to help the non-profit with its Texas six month, running/walking, nutrition and schoolyard gardening program funding for 160,000 Texas K-5th graders. The grant also funds a collaboration with The Michael & Susan Dell Center for Advancement of Healthy Living, as well as an evaluation of a pilot collaboration with Sustainable Food Center of Austin, to more deeply affect healthy eating habits of thousands of Marathon Kids throughout Central Texas. In addition there will be an evaluation of the Chicago and Baltimore Marathon Kids programs.
Findings from a recent study of Marathon Kids by The Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living at The University of Texas School of Public Health indicate that children who participate in the six month program engage in more running activity. The children also report a greater sense of athletic identity as well as other factors associated with healthier living.
